Forgotten Yankees: Kevin Smith

The New York Yankees nearly won the 2024 World Series, as that was (and so far) the closest they’ve gotten to forever since 2009. New York had a monster team in 2024, led by Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Gerrit Cole – but one player on the Yankees 2024 team is widely forgotten about: Kevin Smith.
Kevin Smith played in just 2 games for the New York Yankees in 2024. Smith signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in early 2024, and began the season with Triple-AAA Scranton.
On April 13th, 2024, the Yankees selected Smith to their Major League roster. Smith made just one appearance for the team in which he never recorded an at-bat. The Yankees would DFA Smith on April 18th, later outrighting him back to AAA on the 20th of April. The move to DFA Smith was to clear space on the 40-man roster for Taylor Trammell, who New York claimed off waivers for the Dodgers.
Trammell would be credited with the Dodgers in their 2024 World Series bid. Overall, he played just 5 games each for both Los Angeles and New York.
Nearly a month later on May 25th, the Yankees would once again bring Kevin Smith to the Majors – he once again made just one lone appearance as a pinch runner and was outrighted back to AAA on May 28th.
Kevin Smith originally rejected the DFA and elected free agency before accepting the assignment back to SWB the following day. Smith would finish the 2024 season in the minors, slashing .244/.295/.340 in 73 games.
Following the season, Smith would elect to be a free agent, but after not being picked up by a team he would then announce his retirement come March 24th, 2025.
Smith, appeared in the Majors across 4 seasons, playing the final 2 of his 116 career games as a member of the New York Yankees.
