Jonah Tong Slated For Next MLB Opportunity In Upcoming Miami Series

Although 2026 is a lost season, the New York Mets cannot and should not lose their eyes of a possible 2027 prize. 23-year-old hurler Jonah Tong is expected to be recalled from Triple-AAA next week for the Miami Marlins series, which begins on September 7th. Overall, this is a move that could see the Tim Lincecum-compared pitcher stay in the Majors. 

Tong, a top pitching prospect for the Mets, has had a rough go so far in limited (and very inconsistent) time at the Major League level. Making his MLB debut last season after starting 2025 in Double-AA, Tong struggled heavily in the Majors with a 7.71 ERA across 5 starts. Now in 2026 he has fared better, but a season stat line of just 10 innings pitched all from relief appearances rather than starts puts a question mark on the Mets 2027 plans for him.

In 23 games started with Triple-AAA Syracuse, Jonah Tong is riding a 5.38 ERA in 107 innings. Tong has 126 K’s with the minor league Mets, but a 1.374 WHIP has gotten the best of him. Overall though, Tong’s past 4 starts in AAA have showcased his early 2025 self. 

Across his last 4 starts in AAA, Jonah Tong has gone 21.1 innings with 23 strikeouts and 10 walks. The righty has carried a 0.84 ERA in that span and recently carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning in his August 29th start. 

Mets interim head coach Andy Green indicated that if Tong was to join the team, that it would be part of an extended rotation. Tong ranks as the Mets No.2 pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline, and this latest opportunity could see Tong ending up staying on the Mets’ 26-man for 2027.

The biggest factor of Jonah Tong is that the New York Mets rushed him last year. Everyone and anyone could agree with that. Tong began 2024 in A, ending in AA for just 2 games started – so then he begins 2025 in AA, pitches fantastic in 20 starts leading to him promoted to AAA after just 2 starts he got the call to the bigs.

Now that Jonah Tong has had time to get comfortable in what has been a full season in AAA, his stats have improved. He was shaky in the early going, but those 4 latest starts have him showing his true potential.

Seeing the state of the New York Mets pitching, one could suspect that Tong could be on New York’s opening day roster for 2027 – but it will mainly be based on how he performs to end 2026 and likely how he does in 2027 spring training. This could give Tong a possible opportunity as the Mets fourth or fifth starter. Nonetheless, Tong is dangerous when good – he is just yet to showcase that at the biggest level.
