Former Yankees Catching Prospect Coming Off Of Historic Month With Rival Red Sox

Former New York Yankees prospect Mickey Gasper is coming off of a historic month of August with the Boston Red Sox. Gasper, who was drafted 817th overall by New York in 2018, was in the Yankees' farm system until late 2023. He was selected in the Rule 5 Draft by the Red Sox in December of ‘23, and appeared in 13 Major League games for them in 2024, where he went 0-for-18.

After spending 2025 with the Twins, Gasper would wind up being back in the tea party city with the Red Sox for 2026, after being claimed off waivers. This would be a move by Boston that would later propel them in the month of August.

The catcher was on a power hitting month of August, smashing 6 home runs and carrying a slash line of .400/.571/1.100 for a 1.671 OPS. Gasper, who also dabbles as a first baseman and DH, carried 13 RBIs and 10 walks across the 12 games he played in August.

Gasper has been playing like the second coming of Ted Williams

This monstrous OPS of 1.671 is the highest since Barry Bonds in 2004 and ranks 3rd all-time for OPS in a calendar month only behind Ted Williams' 2.314 OPS he set in September of 1957, and Bonds’ 1.828 in April of 2004. This statistical grouping dates back to 1901.

Overall, Gasper is hitting a career-high .279 through 47 games this season with a 1.4 WAR. The 30-year-old has been an unexpected part of the Red Sox’s mid-season turn around as the league now enters the final month of regular season play.
