After spending two months on the IL shelf, Max Fried is returning to the Yankees starting five. It was announced that Fried will take the mound for game 2 of a Bronx doubleheader against the Pirates.Â

Fried was diagnosed with a bone bruise in mid-May after what many originally feared to be an injury that would need Tommy John surgery. The Yankees initially announced that Fried would make one more Triple-A rehab start on a 60-pitch limit. After the postponement due to weather, New York would pivot away from that to bring him back for what is looking to be a limited first-game return. Teams can carry an extra pitcher during a doubleheader set and the Yankees are off on Thursday, so the bullpen will be dealt to handle the extra few innings of work.
Fried’s likely abbreviated MLB appearance today has him re-join a Yankees rotation that has been battered with injuries this season, most recently losing Carlos Rodon.
Overall before landing on the IL, Fried turned a 3.21 ERA over his 10 previous appearances, where he also averaged roughly six innings per appearance.
