Yankees' McMahon Hitting Below .100 To Begin Season

Ryan McMahon has gotten off to possibly the slowest start a player can have after recording multiple hits. McMahon has appeared in all nine games for New York, and is 2-for-23 with a -0.4 WAR.

McMahon’s two hits in 23 at-bats translates to a .087 average, where he also has k’d in nearly half of his at-bats (11 strikeouts) to begin his 2026 campaign.

Since being a Yankee at the 2025 trade deadline, McMahon’s offense has been so sluggish to where he is hitting below the Mendoza line (.192) in 63 games as a Yankee. New York traded for McMahon mainly for his defensive capability, as he is the first true third baseman that the team has had since A-Rod. McMahon’s defense has been on-point since being acquired, but that doesn’t necessarily make up for his lack of offense due to just how unproductive it has been.

McMahon was a career .243 hitter with a .746 OPS from 2017-2024. Since the beginning of 2025 that has seen 163 games split between the Rockies and the Yankees, McMahon is batting .209 with a .679 OPS.

Overall the Yankees 5-9 hitters in the lineup have gotten off to slow starts this season, but McMahon is the only one with a sub .100 batting average. There aren’t any top replacements for McMahon unless New York trades him, which it would be unlikely for any team to pick him up due to his contract unless New York eats it. Oswaldo Cabrera is a third base option, but he also hasn’t had the greatest start in Triple-AAA himself.

More than likely, New York will ride it out with McMahon at least throughout the month of April, hoping that he finds his footing in the batters box.
