Patrick Roy's Firing Was Shocking, But Never Came As A Surprise

On Easter Sunday the Islanders cracked the head coaching egg, firing Patrick Roy and hiring Peter DeBoer. The firing came as a shock with just four games remaining in the season and New York being a playoff contender, just one point out of a secured playoff berth.

Despite being in close contention, the club will most likely fall fully out of a playoff spot before Thursday’s home game against the Maple Leafs.

Roy had a tenure that was full of ups-and-downs and the true reason as to why this firing was ‘shocking’ is due to the timing. Overall the firing in itself is not much surprising. DeBorer will be on a multi-year deal and will get his first taste of New York Islanders head coaching in that Thursday home game.

As head coach of New York, Roy posted a record of 97-78-22, and overall saw the team get better in what was nearly three-full seasons at the helm. Roy started off with 20-wins in his first year of Islanders head coaching, and then brought the team to a 35-win season just last year and now got fired with four games remaining for a 42-win team. More so the combination of what has been a dramatic late-season implosion from poor team performance made it clear that there was organizational dissatisfaction.

Roy and the Islanders had lost four consecutive games and seven of their last 10 when New York made the decision to fire.
