Why is it that for about a decade now at this point that the New York Yankees love getting former power hitters past their prime? Joey Gallo, Josh Donaldson and Jay Bruce are some solid examples to this argument.
On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees signed 34-year-old Randal Grichuk to a minor league contract. Grichuk was a Yankee killer when with the Blue Jays, but his Canada days have been long gone. Overall, in 35 games at Yankee Stadium Grichuk carries a .278 average in just over 100 at-bats.Â

2025 saw his bat crater with a .228/.273/.401 slash line. Nonetheless the Yankees need righty-hitters and Grichuk destroyed lefty pitching in the three preceding seasons. Between 2022-24, Grichuk hit .317 against lefty hurlers and slugged .573 with 25 home runs.
That version of Randal Grichuk would be loved in New York if he can revive his career. This signing overall gives the Yankees another platoon player and makes it even more evident that Jasson Dominguez will likely have a ticket to begin 2026 at Triple-AAA. If Grichuk makes the team then it will mean Dominguez is out of a 26-man opening day roster slot.
Randal Grichuk will earn a $2.5M base salary if he makes the Yankees roster.
