It is expected that the Raiders will be releasing Geno Smith ahead of the new league year on March 11th, 2026, which will clear a roster spot for No.1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza to start immediately.
Mendoza is the clear-cut projected first overall pick in this upcoming 2026 draft after his Heisman and National Championship-winning season with Indiana. Smith’s 2026-27 salary is set to become fully guaranteed on the third day of the new league year, if not traded or released.

Smith is coming off of a miserable 2-13 season last year with the Raiders, where he threw 19 touchdowns and a league-leading 17 interceptions in 15 games. Overall, Smith enters his 13th season in the league having brought just three winnings seasons to teams. Smith went 9-8 in 2022, 8-7 in 2023, and 10-7 in 2024, all of which were with the Seahawks. Smith did go 1-0 with the Jets in 2015, but that occurred in his lone start. In 98 stars, Smith has a record of 42-56.
At age 35, Eugene Cyril Smith III will be considered as a top veteran free agent arm around the likes of Kirk Cousins and Derrick Carr if he ends up coming out of retirement. Geno Smith is yet to be linked to any particular team at the making of this article.
