Just a year into Division I status, the University of New Haven has made history again.

Tuesday, May 19th, marked the first-time that an Australian born quarterback has signed with a DI program. Sunshine Coast-born flamethrower Thomas Huber has officially signed with UNH, marking himself as Australia’s first college quarterback.

Huber originally announced his commitment to the Connecticut university in December of 2025. The 19-year-old is a two-year starter at Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and spent time with IMG Academy down in Florida. Being from the land down under, Huber was born in Queensland, Australia, a massive 9,586 miles away from West Haven, where the New Haven football team resides.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing in at 185 pounds, the young baller will look to add collegiate starts to what is already a ground breaking career. While New Haven’s latest football recruit gets accustomed to the Chargers campus come his Freshman year in September, the program gears up with projected quarterback AJ Duffy to begin Week 1 under center.

Nonetheless, Huber’s addition is just the latest of Aussie-born football players to come stateside. The number of Australian punters in college football programs has been established for years and has reached the pro football level with the past two Super Bowl champions having Aussie punters on their rosters.
