Anthony Volpe is back in the majors. For some Yankee fans it is a nightmare, as for others it gives hope that a once-top prospect could revive his career.

Volpe’s time back in the Bronx may be limited, the whole reason as to his call-up was due to Jose Caballero being placed on the 10-day IL. Caballero was playing great before fracturing his right middle finger. The 2025 trade deadline acquisition posted a 1.7 WAR in 41 games with a .259 batting average with 13 stolen bases this season, and overall has been a dominant force with New York in 81 total games.
Since being acquired by the Yankees in 2025 Cabby has a 2.9 WAR with 28 stolen bases and a career-high .262 batting average.
Caballero’s dominance during Volpe’s missed time had the New Jersey shortstop lose not only his starting role, but a spot on the Yankees 26-man roster entirely.
If volpe doesn’t perform at the expectations set and continues to struggle defensively, then most likely we will see him once again shifted to the minors or even possibly traded. Volpe’s name has been a roar in trade rumors ever since New York optioned him to Triple-AAA once his rehab assignment was up.
Despite a horrific 2025 that featured 150 strikeouts in 153 games, along with a league-leading 19 errors, Volpe was able to produce for a 1.6 WAR. Overall, in 472 games as a Yankee from 2023, Volpe has 52 home runs and is a .222 hitter, who is sporting a career OPS of .662 and has accounted for 192 RBIs. Volpe has also struck out 473 times, averaging one K per-game.
In 9 Triple-AAA games this season, Volpe has hit .205 with 10 strikeouts. Defensively across 18 total minor league games this season between AA and AAA, Volpe has two errors.
With Anthony Volpe back and healthy, he will need to prove a lot in a short allotted time span and prove to the Yankees organization that he still belongs in the Bronx, and could play at the Gold Glove level that he proved to during his rookie season.
