Due to the Eastern Conference being so tightly contested the Buffalo Sabres were never truly out of any playoff picture. At the end of November, Buffalo sat 16th with 24 points and as the only sub .500% team in the East. Now, at the end of December the Sabres are on a nine-game winning streak and sit 9th with 44 points.
With a 14-year playoff drought, it is hard to give Buffalo any benefit of the doubt – although this Sabres team (at least as of late) has shown to be different. Lately it has been a team that has shown resilience, especially without having star Rasmus Dahlin for several parts of this season. Buffalo has demonstrated time and time again this campaign that the team can and will win without its top player(s).
Buffalo will begin the new year with bad news for Alex Lyon, who is returning back to New York state to be evaluated for a lower-body injury, setting up Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to start on New Years Eve today (Wednesday.) For the majority of this season, the Sabres have gone with a three-goalie system, but with Luukkonen’s improved skills, it makes losing Lyon less hard.
Tonight’s test will come against the powerful Dallas Stars in Texas. Dallas, 25-7-7 with 57 points, carries a two-game skid going into tonight. Nonetheless the Stars continue to have a top offense and defense in the West. Buffalo enters looking to make it 10-straight for the first time since November of 2018. Overall the Sabres are 8-9-2 on the road this season, but have gone 1-6-1 against Dallas in their last eight matchups.
