Brady Cook Becomes Latest Jets QB To Join Dolphins

Geno Smith is QB1 and 4th round pick Cade Klubnik will take up second-string roles as the New York Jets prepare for Week 1.

While the QB room is set, the New York Jets may face a familiar face this season. Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe were waived as the Jets trimmed down their roster to reach the 53-man regular-season limit. Cook was taken quickly by the Miami Dolphins and Zappe would end up re-signing with the Jets to be on their practice squad.

Brady Cook going to Miami makes him the latest Jets quarterback to end up in the 305. Mike White and Zach Wilson have both ended up with the Dolphins one way or another after their Jets stint during the 2020s, making Cook part of that list now. Cook was claimed off waivers by Miami in part of 7 waiver transactions the Dolphins made.

New York had interest in bringing Cook back as a practice squad QB if he cleared waivers. The claim by Miami ultimately had the Jets pivot to Zappe.

During his rookie season last year, Brady Cook appeared in 5 games for New York with 4 starts. He would complete 57.5% of his passes for 739 yards, while throwing 2 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. Those stats came during throwaway games in which the Jets were already long eliminated from playoff contention.

Surprisingly, the Jets did not make any waiver claims on quarterbacks despite holding the No.2 overall waiver wire priority. The lack of adding a quarterback now puts rookie Cade Klubnik just an injury away from seeing the playing field – a move that is incredibly risky for the Jets if they continue to roll with two 53-man roster QBs.
