Mets Go Into Final 12 Games With Wild Card Hopes Living By A Thread

Pete Alonso walked it off in extra innings, ending an eight-game skid that nearly pushed New York out of a secured playoff spot. The Mets (77-73) are 12.5 games back of the Phillies, who already have clinched the division.

New York’s playoff hopes depend on a wild card entry. The Mets currently hold a +1.5 lead over Arizona as the teams enter mid-September. A chance at the second and first wild card berths are unlikely for the Queens team, as they sit -5 and -9 games back on those slots, although they can try to lessen the gap starting tonight.

The Mets are in the middle of their final home stand of the season. Tonight starts a three-game set against the second-place wild card Padres. Clay Holmes gets the call to start with David Peterson with the game two bid a battered Jonah Tong for the series finale.

Overall, the Mets have a 50% difficulty schedule to cap off the season. 3 vs SD, 3 vs WASH, 3 at CHC, 3 at MIA. The hope my heart has says the Mets can go 9-3 to finish the season at 86-76. Realistically though with how New York has played and struggled, they will most likely go 5-7 to finish 82-80. The potential 82-80 record could still potentially get them into the playoffs, but they would have to depend heavily on the misfortune of several other teams such as the Diamondbacks, Giants and Reds.
