For the first time since 1973, the New York Knicks are NBA Champions. Unfortunately though, the Knicks are yet to once again be finals champions.

Last night was the finals for the somewhat still-new NBA Cup, which for those who do not know is an in-season tournament for all 30 NBA teams that features group play and knockout stages that culminates in a championship game.

The Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs last night looking to become the 2025 Cup champs.

A two-point Spurs lead after one saw both sides notch 31 points, going into halftime with a slim San Antonio 61-59 lead. The Knicks would keep the game close, but continue to trail, being outscored by three in the third, allowing the Wembanyama-led team to have a five-point lead going into the fourth.

A New York bashing saw the Knicks outscore San Antonio, 35-19. New York’s fourth quarter surge was more than enough to overcome their five point deficit, winning by 11, 124-113.

OG Anunoby was world-class with his 28 points and 9 rebounds. It was Jalen Brunson though who was perfect. Brunson was +15 on the court in his 41 minutes of game time, notching 25 points and 8 assists. Brunson would only hit one three, making 22-out-of-his-25 points come from inside the paint, leading him to be named as Finals MVP.

KAT and Mitch contributed big as well, with Anthony-Towns securing a combined 10 rebounds and assists, with Mitchell Robinson getting two critical blocks. Tyler Kolek, who came into the game averaging less than four points per game, had a career night with 14 points, while also getting 5 rebounds and 5 assists in just 20 minutes of court time.

Despite this being the first championship win for the Knicks of any kind since the Nixon Administration, the Knicks will not raise an NBA Cup banner at Madison Square Garden. Per Ian Begley, the Knicks do not diminish the accomplishment, but instead have bigger goals in mind of winning the NBA Finals in June.
