2026 New York Jets Become First Team Since World War 2 To Lose A Game Like This
What could’ve been on a very wet and rainy Sunday in September. The New York Jets had a 10-point lead against Green Bay, and by time overtime was all said and done, it would be the Jets heading to the tunnel with the loss, 20-17.
It was New York’s game to lose, at one point when halftime arrived and very early in the second half it seemed as if the Jets were going to run away with the lead. Instead the Jets imploded in the most New York Jets way possible: by making some absurd pro football history.
The New York Jets are the first team on record since 1941 to lose a game that they held an opponent to less than 200 yards, having the opponent have over 100 penalty yards and the losing team having a positive turnover margin. The Jets defense held Green Bay to 199 yards, while the Packer’s mistakes cost them some 133 yards and the Jets had a positive turnover margin of +1.
Entering today since 1941, some 85 years ago, teams were 44-0. Now because of the New York Jets, teams are 44-1.
Now, we all know 85 years is a long time, but here’s some added context: World War II was raging with the evil ways of Hitler and Stalin in Axis power as the U.S. was yet to enter the Allied effort at that point, the first jet-powered aircraft was only 2-years old, the New York Jets (Titans) franchise wouldn’t exist until roughly 20-years later, the 1941 NFL season only carried an 11-game schedule, and the Fullback position was highly regarded as one of the most important positions on a football team.
So yeah…It’s been a minute.
This all kind of reminds me of the Titanic meme with old Rose saying “It’s been 84 years,” I mean technically if the Jets did this in 2025 you could have actually used this meme for it.
Nonetheless, as historic and frankly ugly this loss was, the New York Jets looked like an NFL team out there. That is something that could not have been said about this team next year. The New York Jets are 1-1 heading into Week 3 against the Lions. New York’s next 3 games in total will see them face Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland.
