How An Error Panini Football Card Would Correctly Predict An Outcome Several Years Later
One of my most unique cards in my personal collection is a 2020 Panini Chronicles Luminance Football rookie card of James Robinson. The card, part of the pink editions, is numbered 225 and features the running back Robinson as a rookie during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
What makes the card special is that it displays “New York Jets’ instead of “Jacksonville Jaguars” as the team that Robinson plays for, making it an error rookie card. Overall, the card isn’t worth much despite its error status as you can pick a raw one up on eBay for under $10 as it has mainly become a novelty piece. Many collectors have viewed the card in an amusing fashion due to it correctly predicting the future. The main reason as to why the card isn’t valuable is due to the fact it is not a special card, not being numbered or having some type of patch or autograph insert.
The card gained popularity in 2022 when the New York Jets traded for James Robinson on October 25th. New York sent the Jaguars a conditional sixth-round pick in exchange for Robinson, who came over as a corresponding move after Jets’ running back Breece Hall suffered an ACL injury.
Robinson came to New York with over 340 yards in 7 games with Jacksonville, but would adjust quickly to the new decreased role with New York. He would only end up playing in four games for the Jets, being in a backup role. The 24-year-old would post 29 rushing attempts for 85 yards, averaging roughly 3 yards per attempt. He would also notch 5 yards receiving off of 2 receptions.
Despite appearing in just 4 games for 57 snaps as a Jet, James Robinson would get his first cards as an official member of the New York Jets. Between regular base cards with the 2022 Panini Contenders Playoff Ticket Series, to numbered Select Prizm patch autographed cards, making him part of a very small group to have an error card and then play for the team that the error card had him listed on.
Robinson would leave the Jets after the 2022 season, and last appeared in an NFL games in 2023 bouncing between teams including the New York Giants before finding his 2026 landing spot in the UFL.
