Yankees New Era Of Baby Bombers In Works After Spring Training Reassignments

Optioning down Spencer Jones came as a surprise by pinstripe loyalists, as the expectation all fans, both casual and diehard had, was that Jones would be on New York’s opening day roster.

Jones was drilling the balls literally out of the Steinbrenner Field into the parking lot. At the time of the roster move, Spencer Jones was hitting a .333 with half his hits being home runs upon the reassignment to minor league camp.

Following Jones’ reassignment was another top Yankees position player prospect in Geroge Lombard Jr., who was faring much worse in spring training than Jones. Lombard was hitting .185 (5-for-27) in 11 games, where he swiped two bases and posted a triple.

Spencer Jones, who is ranked as the No.6 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline, is expected to begin 2026 at Triple-AAA, while George Lombard Jr., who is Pipeline’s No.32 overall prospect, is expected to start his 2026 regular season in Double-AA.

Jones is 24 as opposed to Lombard's youthful 20. Both are expected to be wearing pinstripes in the majors, it is more so a question of when instead of if.

Spencer Jones tore up the minor leagues in 2025, he belted 35 home runs while hitting .274 and having an OPS near 1.000 on through 116 games. Jones is a great all-around hitter who can provide power or simple small ball, with the only factor against him is striking out. Jones K percentage in 2025 was over 35%, with it being at 35.6% in 2024.

George Lombard Jr., isn’t even of drinking age yet. He’s 20 and last season had a -3.6 years average age on his Double-AA Somerset Patriots squad. He hit .215 in 108 AA games last season and overall .235 if you factor in his 24 high-A games being included. I’m excited to see Lombard in his first full-season at the AA level as he will definitely get an opportunity to show off his speed, coming off of a 35 stolen base season in 2025.
