Andrew Velazquez became an instant fan favorite when the Yankees signed him in free agency in 2020. Velazquez grew up just mere blocks away from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, idolizing Derek Jeter as he himself plays shortstop.

Velazquez only spent 28 games in the majors for New York in 2021, and didn’t put up any above average stats. A .224 hitter with a .594 OPS with 6 XBH and 6 RBIs as he spent time between the bigs and Triple-AAA, before being eventually waived by the Yankees organization.
‘Squid’ would then spend 2022 and ‘23 on the Angels, appearing in a total of 279 combined games, where he hit .009 under the Mendoza line at .191. Velazquez would then spend the entire 2024 season in the minors for the Braves and would land back with the Yankees over the 2024-25 offseason.
Many were excited to have the Bronx kid back on the team, but it would be more-than-clear that he would play in injury time in a next-man-up role and would spend the majority of his time with Triple-AAA Scranton as a versatile depth option.
In 56 Triple-AAA games for SWB, Velazquez is hitting a .213 with a .582 OPS. The 30-year-old switch hitter has posted 3 home runs and has driven in 16, while also swiping 16 bases himself.
More than likely we will not see Velazquez back in the majors this season for the Yankees as he is not even on New York’s 40-man and is in the midst of one of his worst seasons of his minor league career.
