Yankees Faced With Uncomfortable Tim Hill Situation

Tim Hill has been overall one of the best in-season moves that the Yankees have made in recent memory, but since revamping his career in the Bronx Tim has steadily gone downhill.

When Tim Hill became a Yankee his career ERA rested north of 4.00 through over 350 games with a career pWAR of -0.6. Hill was acquired by the Yankees as a free agent, after being DFA’d from the White Sox a week prior. When Hill came to New York during that 2024 season, his season ERA was a massive 5.87, but he also carried the third-best groundball rate in the Majors at 65.6% amongst qualified relievers.

Hill instantly produced for the Yankees, putting up a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings across 35 games with the team. Despite being acquired mid-season, the 34-year-old played a vital part in what was an eventual World Series contending run.

2025 featured the first full-season of Hill as a Yankee and he impressed out of the Yanks’ bullpen. A 1.2 pWAR marked his best career season in what featured 67 innings pitched across 70 appearances. Hill’s 2025 ERA was 3.09 that was accompanied by a 1.104 WHIP, making him one of the most reliable and consistent options to go late in games.

Now in present day 2026, Tim Hill has regressed and has been inconsistent. His struggles through 27 appearances this season has seen his ERA balloon to a 4.03 across 22.1 innings. Hill’s main struggles have come over the course of his last five games where he has allowed eight earned runs across 3.2 innings, giving him an ERA in that timespan of 19.64.

Hill’s April and March showcased him making 13 relief appearances and pitching to the tune of a 1.42 ERA across 12.2 innings. His struggles all came in the month of May and now that it is June 1st, Hill will look to improve and put last month’s woes behind him.

Nonetheless though, we have seen the Yankees show signs of urgency like never before seen in recent years. If Hill’s struggles continue mid-to-late June, then New York may be faced with an uncomfortable situation, similar almost to which they faced with Devin Williams just a season prior.

Hill is on the last year of what is a two-year contract with New York worth $5.5 million, and is set for unrestricted free agency at season’s end.
