Why Derrick Rose's Knicks' Time Is Up

Updated: May 18, 2023

The New York Knicks are one of the hottest teams in the NBA, essentially guaranteed a playoff spot if they continue to play consistent basketball at this point.

Derrick Rose has been out of the New York Knicks rotation since early January. The former MVP struggled in the 27 games he has played this season, posting 5.6 PPG along with 1.7 AST and 1.5 TRB. Those stats have come with inconsistent minutes though.

Rose’s best playing days are far behind him, a prime cut short due to multiple injuries and set-backs. Nevertheless the future hall of fame point guard still contributes in a big way, both on and off the court.

Derrick Rose is able to provide the veteran mentality in the locker room, affecting the in-game performance. The Knicks just had a nine-game winning streak this season and sit top five in the Eastern Conference, they did and are still doing that without Rose. New York is not relying on the 34-year-old, if they were then this would be a totally different season. Having Rose on the bench is doing nothing besides providing that veteran mentality as stated before and that only does so much.

New York has been one of the best NBA teams ever since they went with the set rotations back in January, with that there is no reason whatsoever to switch anything up. Most likely Derrick Rose’s time in New York is over, it’s just not official yet. Rumors of a potential contract buy-out by the Suns’ only fuel that narrative.
