Last night saw another blown save by Devin Williams. For some reason unknown to man Aaron Boone can’t help himself going to the 5.30+ ERA pitcher that Williams is.
New York nearly has five blown saves in the month of August alone. This month has blown – literally. But nothing has blown more than the four blown saves the Yankees made against the Kansas City Royals four-years ago on this very day.
What would be an eventual 8-6 Yankees win in 11 innings against Kansas City in a game started August 9th and ended on the 10th, saw four blown saves by New York.
Starter Jameson Taillon put up six scoreless innings, but would end up with a no-decision. The Yankees and Royals traded runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, while each plated a pair of runs in the 10th. This marked the first time in MLB history where both teams scored in the 7th-10th innings.
Yankees’ arms of Jonathan Loaisiga, Chad Green, Zack Britton and Clay Holmes all blew save opportunities. Only one other team in MLB history has had four blown saves in a single game, and that is the 1995 Astros. The Yankees though are the only team to blow four and still win.
The fifth and final save attempt worked for the Yankees as Wandy Peralta closed things to seal the win – albeit he did allow an RBI single in what was almost a fifth blown save.
