New York Yankees 2025 Trade Deadline Grades

The New York Yankees had one of their busiest trade deadlines in recent memory. The organization finished up their shopping in the final minutes of Thursday’s deadline cutoff as this looks to go down as a very productive deadline with a long-term positive effect. Nonetheless, let's get to grading.

New York started off the deadline acquiring Rockies 3B Ryan McMahon for minor league arms Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz. I was a little skeptical of New York shipping off the lefty arm of Herring, who has posted a 1.71 ERA through 89.1 innings across Single-A. The addition of McMahon allows Jazz Chisholm to go back to second base and overall gives the Yankees an all-star bat that is under control through 2027. Despite having struggles across 2025, McMahon has been on a tear since arriving in New York and is currently hitting .353 in 5 games with the Yankees, after hitting .217 across 100 games with Colorado.

Trade Grade: B-

Despite being a diehard Yankees fan I loved Amed Rosario when he was on the Mets. Now that he is a Yankee in exchange for RHP Clayton Beeter and OF Brown Martinez, it is a great deal that New York won already in my opinion. Beeter has a career 9.82 ERA and Martinez is only 18-years-old that is unproven. Rosario is signed through this season and provides services at SS, 2B and OF. The 29-year-old was hitting .270 with a .736 OPS through 46 games with Washington. Overall, this is a likely rental trade with Rosario taking a presumed platoon spot.

Trade Grade: A-

Carlos Carrasco being a Yankee will always look funny on his baseball card. A short-lived pinstripe career saw him get pin-stripped in 8 games for New York with a high 5.91 ERA. The Yankees traded Carrasco to Atlanta for cash whilst clearing a spot on the 40-man.

Trade Grade: A-

In desperate need of pitching the Yankees waited all the way to the deadline to make a splash as they got their feet wet in trading for Pirates David Bednar. The righty has a 1.3 WAR and a 2.35 ERA in 42G/38IP, which includes a low 1.08 ERA in the last 28-days. The Yankees did have to bleed in this trade for the two-time all-star arm, giving up No. 8 ranked prospect Rafael Flores and #14 prospect Edgleen Perez, along with OF Brian Sanchez.

Trade Grade: B+

In response to Aaron Judge falling on the IL and no guarantee that he will be back in the outfield come mid-August, the Yankees acquired White Sox outfielder Austin Slater. Now that name sounds like he belongs a Yankee – but it may not be for long as his contract expires after this season. Slater brings over a .236 batting average in 51 games with the Sox, and 49 career stolen bases. New York sent RHP Greg Ziehl to Chi-Town for Slater. Overall, I feel like the Yankees should have used Amed Rosario in the outfield if they didn’t want a Bellinger-Grisham-Dominguez outfield.

Trade Grade: C

The Yankees called up the Rockies again, but this time it was for pitching. The Yankees sent #10 prospect Roc Riggio and lefty Ben Shields for RHP Jake Bird. Bird only carries 2 years and 92 days of MLB service time as he takes the cross-country flight to JFK. Although Bird sits 4-1 this season, he has posted a 4.73 ERA and 1.481 WHIP in 53.1 innings. Overall, Bird has a career 4.57 ERA in 230.1 innings, in what looks to be Matt Blake’s newest project.

Trade Grade: D-

Just minutes before the deadline, the Yankees traded for utility man Jose Caballero, who leads the league with 34 stolen bases. Caballero is one of the fastest players in the majors, but overall is not known for his bat as he is a .225 career hitter in 328 games. The 28-year-old plays SS, 2B and 3B and won’t hit free agency till 2030. New York sent OF Everson Pereira to Tampa Bay, along with a PTBNL. Pereira, despite being a fan favorite, has not seen any big league action since 2023, when he hit .151 in 93 at-bats. Getting Caballero gives the Yankees much needed speed they have desperately lacked, while also giving the option to potentially move Anthony Volpe to a bench role or back to AAA.

Trade Grade: A+

The Yankees also traded for RHP Camilo Doval from SanFran and is under control till 2027. As of now it has not been reported who New York is sending to the Giants for the flamethrower righty.

Trade Grade: B+ (Pending possible change)

New York shipped off Oswald Peraza to the Angels as it seems that is recently where failed Yankees go to have their careers die-out (Note Tyler Wade, Willie Calhoun, Mike Ford and Aaron Hicks). As of now it has not been reported who New York is receiving from the Angels for Peraza. Overall, this was a very solid trade nonetheless as Peraza was out of options and was hitting .152 in the majors this season.

Trade Grade: B (Pending possible change)

Overall Yankees 2025 trade deadline grade: B-
