Jose Siri Made New York Mets History Before DFA'ing

The 2025 Mets were pathetic, spineless and frankly an illegitimate baseball team this year. Their fall from grace was faster than me spending my entire paycheck the day I got it.

Pitching was a nightmare. Clay Holmes was more dysfunctional than my last relationship and Jonah Tong, a clear young talent, was rushed up and imploded when under any sign of pressure.

Hitting was inconsistent. Juan Soto took a while to get going and then hit what seemed to be only solo home runs. Francisco Lindor had a marvelous, historic season. Pete Alonso seemed to be the only player to actually hit under pressure.

And the cherry topping is Jose Siri: an offseason acquisition by New York that would see him become one of the worst Mets players in franchise history.

Jose Siri was never known for his power, hitting .187 last season and .222 in 2023 with Tampa Bay. He wasn’t really known for his speed either, swiping just 43 bases in over 325 games. The Mets acquired Siri in November of 2019 for RHP Eric Orze, mainly as a depth signing to the outfield.

Siri got injured almost immediately and would miss essentially the entire season with a left tibia fracture. The 30-year-old was activated off the IL on September 9th, but lackluster performances in 16 total games would see the outfielder DFA’d with 5 regular season games remaining. He cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-AAA Syracuse.

In 16 games, Jose Siri went 2-for-32 for a .063 average. Although not the worst batting average in Mets franchise history as that is owned by Billy Hamilton, who hit .045 with a 1-for-22 line in 17 games. Siri is now the most-recent player to have the lowest batting average (previously held by Cameron Maybin) as Siri’s .063 average in 16 games was in a longer stint than Maybin’s 9 games where he went 1-for-28 (.036). Siri had a larger number of games played and at-bats over Maybin, which is why he is now the most-recent.
