Gone But Not Forgotten: Last WW2 Medal of Honor Recipient Dies

June 29th, 2022: It was announced that Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, a World War Two veteran has died. Hershel Williams was a USMC Warrant Officer who received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the battle of Iwo Jima.

Hershel entered service in 1943, ranking up to Chief Warrant Officer 4 and would be part of the battles of Guam and Iwo Jima. Overall Hershel Williams would serve from 1943-45, 1948-49 and 1954-69 being part of the 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment and 3rd Marine Division over his time serving the country. Hershel Williams received the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart, he was the last living Medal of Honor recipient when he passed away. A true American hero, may he Rest In Peace.
