West Haven has had a hockey team on the high school level for decades, producing All-State players and multiple state championship seasons. Hockey is one of the most beloved sports that the town has to offer as diehard Blue Devil fans come to every game, filling up the legendary Bennett Rink.
West Haven hockey has had inconsistent roster numbers over the past several years, this can be due to three reasons, being: that hockey itself is one of the most expensive sports and with the prices continuing a rise, people just cannot afford it any more / recruiting from private schools such as Notre Dame-West Haven / kids losing interest in the sport as they get older, electing not to try out when they get to the high school level.
In the 2021/22 season the West Haven Blue Devils had five seniors on its roster and going into this upcoming season they will have no seniors whatsoever, in fact the team only has 11 returning players for the 2022/23 campaign. Due to the lack of players being on the team it is leading West Haven towards a Co-op. The Co-op would have players hailing from a different school outside the West Haven area with the likes of names such as Oxford, Simsbury, Stratford and Shelton coming up as some of the top choices, according to sources.
Most likely there will be more than 11 West Haven players on the team for the 2022/23 season once tryouts occur and along with a brand new freshman class entering, the numbers would be pushed up. Despite that a Co-op still may be needed for the team. If a Co-op does occur it can help the team heavily when it comes to winning due to the new players as it brings in new talent, but it may also cause a lack of team chemistry due to the new unknown players from different the town elected.
It will be interesting what town ends up being chosen if a Co-op does go into effect along with how it will impact the team.
