A three game losing skid that saw West Haven winless for nearly an entire month finally ended on Friday when the team played a non-league bout vs Fitch.
West Haven entered the beginning of their road trip with a 3-4 record, as they searched to get back at the .500% column. The Blue Devils also went into Groton out of a playoff spot, as the team was essentially in a must-win situation.
Being down 18-7 at the half lit a fire that the Devils desperately needed. Now I don’t know what epic halftime speech head coach Tom Unger gave his team, but what I do know is that it worked massively.
A Blue Devils fiery second half had the Westies’ rally for 32 unanswered points to a powerful 39-18 win. Amir Daniley, a potential DI prospect for West Haven, ended up in the end zone three times. Sophomore Mason Wright, who missed the Amity game due to being in concussion protocol, had two TDs himself in the win.
This was a much needed victory for West Haven, who is now back at .500% at 4-4 and now narrowly clings onto a playoff spot with the eighth and final Class LL berth.
West Haven’s 715 points has them 120 away from seventh place Danbury and gives them a slim 20-point margin over NFA. West Haven would face 7-1 New Britain if the season ended today.
The Blue Devils are set to face Hand (7-1) and North Haven, who is also at 4-4 themselves, for the Thanksgiving game.
