The Blue Devils are 3-3 through their first six games of the season. The .500% mark under first-year Devils’ head coach Tom Unger has seen close-net losses against Staples and Fairfield Prep, along with a blowout against Cheshire where West Haven was shutout.

The West Haven v. Cheshire game was an ugly one for the Westies, which saw them bleed blue. A 35-0 beating started with a Rams opening 15-run drive that shaved 9 minutes off the clock. Overall, Cheshire would run for over 250 yards when everything was all said and done.

The shutout score marks the first time the Blue Devils had their first regular season shutout loss since November 1st, 2019, where the Blue Devils fell 37-0 vs Hand. The was the pre-COVID era of high school football when West Haven only were the winners of two games that season. You also have to go back to the pre-COVID era as well for when the Devils’ lost at least three games during the regular season.

West Haven is set to face Amity on Halloween for what would be their second-to-last home game of the season.

Currently, the Blue Devils are on the outside looking in for the Class LL playoffs. The Blue Devils are in a fifth-place tie in the win-loss column with Glastonbury, Southington, Danbury and NFA. Due to the standings though being based off of a points system, West Haven sits out of the playoff picture, but looking in as they stand ninth in a division where the top eight teams make playoff football.

West Haven’s 495 points, which are based off of strength of schedule, has the team -15 out on NFA and nearly 450 points out on first place Fairfield Prep. West Haven is not scheduled to face any of the teams in front or behind them the remainder of the season, as the remaining games will be against opponents that compete in other classes.
