Bottom Of The Order: The Worst Hitter In Mets Franchise History

As of 6/23/25 there have been 1,036 players in New York Mets history to record at least one regular season at-bat with the team. Out of the 1,036 players, only 858 have recorded a hit. 29/850 of those players in the bottom of Mets franchise batting average history have a batting average below .070, recording at least one hit as a Met. Out of those 29, 7 are position players.

The Mets have been a professional baseball team since 1962. That then led me to wondering who is the worst position player in Yankees history in terms of batting average / at bats?

If you want to be technical, the most recent player is actually an active player who resides on the Mets: Jose Siri. The offseason acquisition by the Mets hit .050 (1-for-20) in his first 10 games as a Met before falling on the 10-day IL with a fractured left tibia. Due to Siri still being an active member on the Mets, I’m not going to count his stat line as the most recent as he can improve that number (or make it worse) once he returns.

Most Recent: Cameron Maybin

Cameron Maybin ended his career as a Met in 2021. Maybin appeared in 9 games over a 10-day span, going 1-for-28 for a .036 average. His soul hit came in his final game of his career, where he went 1-for-2 with New York.

Oldest: Terry Blocker

Terry Blocker’s first 18 games of his career in 1985 came as a member of the New York Mets. The former 4th overall pick of the 1981 MLB Draft was given high expectations by the Mets, but those expectations fell flat. In 18 games, Blocker went 1-for-15 for a .067 average and would only spend that 18 game span on the team that drafted him.

Worst With At Least 1 At-bat: Cameron Maybin and Billy Hamilton

Cameron Maybin is statistically the worst position player in Mets franchise history to date in terms of batting average / at-bats. Maybin did record 3 walks for his OBP to be a .182 with an OPS just above .200 to end his career. Despite playing in the second-fewest games on this list (Abraham Almonte, 2023, 8G, 1-15), Maybin did record the highest number of at bats (28) to make him the worst.

Billy Hamilton, who appeared in 17 games and recorded 22 at-bats, went 1-for-22 to tune a .045 average in 2020 for the Mets. He has the lowest batting average with at least 1 hit in New York Mets franchise history for a player with 10+ games played.
