The New York Mets are in dire need of a pitching boost, and it looks like with Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea on the horizon of being activated off the IL, the Mets will get that boost to their starting five - That is until you see their rehab stats.
Starting with Montas, who likely has had the worst 30-day stint in minor league rehab start history. In six starts between High-A+ Brooklyn and Triple-AAA Syracuse, Montas has a 0-3 record and a 12.05 ERA, allowing 30 hits in 18.2 innings. A total of 42 baserunners in under 20 innings translates to a 2.143 WHIP, which stands as the highest of Montas’ pro career. Montas is expected to be done with his rehab starts, which now gives the Mets a tough decision to make as the question now raises if he can pitch efficiently.
Sean Manaea has a better stat line through his three starts, all of which with High-A+ Brooklyn. Winless with an 0-1 record, Manaea has posted a 9.45 ERA and a 2.100 WHIP in only 6.2 innings. Pitching less than one full game undoubtedly has imploded his stat line. Nonetheless, Manaea has still struck out more batters (8) than innings pitched (6.2), to give him a 10.8 K/9. Manaea has also only allowed one home run, it’s the regular small ball hits and several walks he has issued that has been his rehab downfall so far.
