As of 6/6/25 there have been 1,342 players in New York Yankees history with at least one regular season at-bat with the team. 22-out-of-196 players have at least one at-bat and a batting average under .060 with the remaining 174 being hitless, having a .000 average. 6-out-of those 22 players are position players with the rest being pitchers who had at-bats before the universal DH rule.
The Yankees have been a professional baseball team since 1903, when they emerged into the pro baseball scene as the New York Highlanders. That then led me to wondering who is the worst position player in Yankees history in terms of batting average / at-bats?
Most Recent: Jonathan Davis
Jonathan Davis may still be known in Yankee fan’s minds as he played 12 games with New York in 2021. Davis went 1-for-17 with 5 strikeouts for a .059 average. Davis actually got his one and only hit as a Yankee in his first at-bat with the team on August 4th, 2021, so at one point Davis did have a 1.000 average while being a New York Yankee.
Oldest: Pat McCauley
Pat McCauley’s one lone season with the Yankees happened to occur in New York’s very-first year as a team in 1903. McCauley’s six games played featured him going 1-for-19 with an RBI and 5 strikeouts for a .053 average.
Worst With At Least 1 At-bat: Kal Segrist
Kal Segrist appeared in 13 games during New York’s 1952 season, which also happened to be his rookie year in the majors. Segrist went 1-for-23 for his only MLB RBI and was walked three times. Surprisingly Segrist only struck out once, which happened to be the only and only time a ‘K’ was written on his stat sheet.
Despite good plate discipline, Segrist’s 1-for-23 stint landed him a .043 batting average, making him the worst player in Yankees franchise history to date in terms of batting average / at-bats.
