From Hero To Roster Bubble: DeVito's Giants Future In Doubt

Tommy DeVito was an exclusive rights free agent, which meant to accept the Giants contract offer or not play in the NFL this season.

The new additions of Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson, along with first round pick Jaxson Dart, the Giants - along with DeVito now have an underlying question that may not be answered until after the preseason is over. That question is where does DeVito fit?
It wouldn’t make sense having him be QB3 as that would part Dart on the practice squad, which means the only spot for DeVito is on Big Blue’s PS. DeVito did force the Giants to keep three quarterbacks on the roster last season and wasn’t exposed to waivers or demoted to the practice squad.
Now though with Wilson and Winston already cemented in the QB room and Jaxson Dart being expected to take the reins once he is ready, it is once again looking like DeVito is the odd man out.
26-year-old DeVito signed his ERFA tender to return to the Giants for a non-guaranteed 1-year/$1M contract. Despite getting limited playing time, only filling in due to injuries, DeVito has been one of the best passers to come into New York’s QB room since the departure of Eli Manning.
DeVito has only thrown 3 interceptions in 222 attempts and has completed 65.3% of his passes throughout 12 games. His 3-5 record as a starter is highlighted when he led the Giants to their first Monday Night Football win since 2019, as DeVito led New York to a game-winning drive against the playoff bound Packers during his rookie season.
More than likely we will see Tommy Cutlets either on the Giants practice squad or as a trade piece to a QB-needy team. DeVito is a great depth addition to any team in need of a QB2 or QB3, although it is hard to say how he would do as a starter due to his limited time as one.
