Sonny Gray was a bigger flop in New York than most failed players to sport pinstripes. Ask any Yankee fan who watched him play in the Bronx who their top five worst Yankees are and good chance Sonny Gray will be a top three.
Gray was hated in New York, and it turns out he hated being in New York himself.

Since Gray’s trade to the Boston Red Sox, the 36-year-old has bashed the Yankees. Gray recently stated to the Boston Globe that he never wanted to go to New York in the first place and that “It feels good to me to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees.” Why do many players join the Red Sox one way or another and instantly bash the Yanks? Gray never, at least in my recent memory, said anything negative about the Yankees until this trade to Boston.
Let me remind you that this is the same Sonny Gray who said "I just had a big smile on my face and was ready to get here," to the media right after he was acquired by the Yankees.
Gray was traded from the Athletics to the Yankees in July of 2017, in exchange for Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo and James Kaprielian. Gray struggled in New York heavily and eventually lost his role as starter in 2018 to Lance Lynn. Before his demotion to the Yankees ‘pen, Gray had a home ERA of 7.71 in the Bronx.
The Yankees would ship off Gray in the offseason ahead of 2019 spring training to the Reds.
