Buffalo Bills safety CJ Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field over the weekend during training camp with fears of a severe injury. Bills head coach Joe Brady would quiet any and all fears early Monday, confirming that Gardner-Johnson’s injury is a calf strain, while also stating that the team was “really fortunate” that the injury was not more serious.
Further tests revealed that Gardner-Johnson’s injury is a lower calf strain, as it is still unknown what Grade the strain is. A Grade 1 calf strain carries a typical one to three weeks recovery, while a Grade 2 strain could require up to eight weeks possibly, making his timeline to return uncertain at this point.
The Bills signed CJ Gardner-Johnson over the offseason to a short one-year contract worth $3.5 million, with the team expecting the 28-year-old safety to play a heavy defensive role this season.
