Igor Shesterkin Breaks 100-Year Streak With Goalie Goal

100 years and 6,971 games is all it took for a New York Rangers goalie to make franchise history. In New York’s 6,972nd game on a random Thursday night to open up October, it would be Igor Shesterkin going full ice for the MSG goal siren to go off.

Igor Shesterkin scored an empty-net goal in the closing minutes of the third period of a Rangers’ 5-1 win over Tampa Bay. The Lightning pulled goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy for an extra attacker to try to get back into contention.
Over a failed goal attempt on New York with the puck bouncing off the end boards, Shesterkin would golf-swing it up the ice, that had him fall to an knee. The puck soared through the neutral zone, landing in the defensive zone to slide into the uncontested net.
Shesterkin’s goal is just the 21st by a goalie in NHL history. Overall the most recent goalie goal was made by a fellow New York iceman in Ilya Sorokin on March 1st, 2025.
On top of scoring a goal, Shesterkin notched 24 saves on 25 shots to help lead New York to their first win of 2026/27. Leaving the game, which is just the second of a very young regular season, the Russian is tied for the team lead in goals.
