Gerrit Cole Flirts With History With Perfect Game Bid

Updated: May 19, 2023

Just a night after New York Yankees pitcher Jameson Taillon tossed seven perfect innings, bringing the historic bid into the eighth inning we had an attempt at history once again. On June 3rd, 2022 Gerrit Cole was on the mound in the Bronx to pitch against the Detroit Tigers, a team that came in standing over 10 games below .500 on the season. Just a night before, fellow pinstripe pitcher Jameson Taillon tossed seven perfect innings as he brought the perfect game bid into the eighth inning where it was then lost. Overall there have just been 23 perfect games in MLB history with 2 coming before 1900 and the last being in August of 2012.

Gerrit Cole came into the game cemented as one of the best pitchers in the majors this season, finally giving the team and fans what they dreamed about when he signed a $324 Million dollar contract several years ago.

Gerrit Cole sent down 20 straight, bringing the perfect game into the 7th inning where it was lost. Nevertheless Cole pitched a shutout, allowing two hits and struck out nine in the blowout win for the Yankees. The 130 win for the Yankees marked their biggest margin of a win since the 2009 season, the same season where they won the World Series. Cole went 7.2 innings of perfect baseball, this is the first time since 1961 that a team has put up consecutive perfect game bids of six innings or more, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The New York Yankees are on fire right now with no team able to stop them as the Bronx team stands number one in all of Major League Baseball.
