The former 3rd overall pick remains an unsigned free agent after spending the past season with the Bills. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on his podcast that the 30-year-old pass rusher is more likely to retire than return to playing.

“It is more likely than not that Joey Bosa has played his last NFL down,” said the veteran journalist.

Bosa entered the NFL a decade ago in the 2016 NFL Draft as one of the most sought-after and promising defensive prospects. Since entering the league, Bosa has been one of the best and most reliable defenders when out on the field, but injuries have taken a toll in recent years. Bosa record 10.5 sacks in 2021, but has not recorded higher than 6.5 in a season since.

In March of 2025, Bosa signed a one-year, $12.6M contract with the Buffalo Bills. Bosa would play like his vintage self early on by forcing 4 fumbles in his first 4 games, including 2 forced fumbles in Week 2 against the New York Jets. He would play 15 games for Buffalo during the 2025/26 season, finishing with 5 sacks, getting his season cut short due to a hamstring injury.

Nick Bosa, Joey’s younger brother and fellow NFL player, hinted last month that his elder brother’s playing days are over. Nick said how Joey hasn’t spent much time thinking about football and has instead been playing golf.

Joey Bosa is yet to officially announce retirement, but all signs are pointing to the former Bill quietly hanging up his helmet.
