Does The UFL Expansion To Rhode Island Open Up New York In The Near-Future?
The UFL has announced the addition of four expansion teams, with one coming in the New England market. Since the creation of the UFL (United Football League), there have been rumors of the league eventually adding a New York market team. Despite the announcement of a Rhode Island franchise, there still remains hope and speculation for a New York market team in the near-future.
Overall, Rhode Island is commonly associated as being in the New England football market, being some 170-miles or a 3-hour drive on I-95 North from New York. Per FOX 61, roughly 23% of Rhode Island residents have expressed online that they are New England Patriots fans when it comes to the NFL.
The addition of Rhode Island also comes with the additions of Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma as expansion teams. The last time professional football saw a New York market team was the USFL New Jersey Generals, which went defunct in 2023.
UFL co-owner Mike Repole has openly stated that Queens, New York, and the New York market continues to be looked at for future expansions – although what remains unclear is where the team would play, and most importantly what year a New York expansion would occur. Nonetheless, a New York-Rhode Island football rivalry is something that no one asked for, but would ultimately become a very iconic rivalry in pro football.
