Since the beginning of May, Anthony Volpe has gotten criticized by both fans and the New York media for his lack of production at the plate.
It is certain that Volpe is one of the best defensive players on the Yankees. His defense-ability makes him an automatic asset and essentially also makes him a guarantee to start and be an everyday player.
When Volpe came up to the show, it was all the roar. A lifetime die hard Yankee fan from Jersey, who is Italian, is playing in the Bronx.
Volpe won a Gold Glove his rookie year, but it was obvious that things had to be worked on offensively as he hit a .209 in 159 games.
2024 was better for Volpe, who played one game more and hit .243 with 11 fewer strikeouts, he also had 42 more hits (115) to average almost a hit per-game. Although the elevated batting average of nearly .040 and fewer punch-outs, Volpe regressed in OPS, HRs and walks.
Now 54 games into 2025, Volpe is hitting a .246 with a .767 OPS, which both are on pace for career highs. The Jersey kid also already has more than half the RBI amount he posted in 2024 (60) not even halfway through the season.
Despite being off to a very solid start, you would think that Vople was 0-for-100 the way negative coverage has been.

Meanwhile Austin Wells, who has had a tremendously worse season than Volpe, has been victimless by fans and media despite him barely hitting over the Mendoza line.
Volpe bests Wells in WAR (1.9 vs 0.4), hits (49 vs 32), RBIs (33 vs 31), stolen bases (7 vs 3), BA (.246 vs .206), OBP% (.325 vs 271), SLG (.444 vs .432), OPS (.767 vs .703) and OPS+ (116 vs 97). The only stat that Wells has over Volpe is in home runs (8 vs 6).
Anthony Volpe is in the midst of a career-best season as Austin Wells is in the midst of a career-worst.
