A LaMelo Ball Trade To New York Would Make No Sense

After a 4-11 start to the season, LaMelo Ball has reportedly grown increasingly frustrated with the Charlotte Hornets organization. The Hornets currently stand 12th in the Eastern Conference, nine games back on the leading 13-2 Pistons.

Ball’s frustration is reportedly so deep with Charlotte that he is open to being traded away from the team that drafted him. In nine games this season, Ball is averaging 21.6 points-per-game. Overall though despite his point production this season, Ball is in the midst of career lows for FG% (.385), and 3-point% (.298). Nonetheless Charlotte is a better team with the one-time all-star than without.

The former rookie of the year has only appeared in 105 games since 2022, being repeatedly sidelined with injuries. When on the court though, Ball is one of the best all-around players in the league.

Ball is still young enough to warrant top interest from any team in the league, but his price tag is enough to separate the playing field. Ball is set to earn $37.9M this season and still has over $130M remaining for the next three years.

A trade to New York would make no sense for either the Knicks or Nets. The Knicks have a powerful starting five that has no reason to be shaken up at this point. Meanwhile the Nets, as bad as they are right now, need to look more towards younger players with a lower price tag in order to properly rebuild.
