In the midst of year 100 as a hockey program, the West Haven Blue Devils have built up a legacy of winning, discipline and even pro hockey talent.Â

Hockey at West Haven High goes back just after the First World War ended, with the forming of multiple New Haven area teams. West Haven and several other teams were formalized in 1926, following the upcoming opening of New Haven Arena in 1927. West Haven was one of the founding member schools / programs being just one of 12 high schools in Connecticut that helped pioneer high school hockey.
During the 1920s and even going farther to the 40s, there were no organized youth hockey programs in the area. Players would get ice time to craft their skills any way possible, with many using the Lake Street pond to practice when it would be frozen over during the winter months.
West Haven would notch their first state championship in 1949, winning a total of nine thus far all at the Division I level. Overall though, the Blue Devils haven't won a banner since 1994 despite numerous playoff runs.
The Blue Devils are 1-4 as of the making of this article, after their bout against Lyman Hall, which resulted in a thrilling overtime loss. West Haven sits with 4 points and are 14th in the Division II standings, where the top 16-teams in DII qualify for playoff hockey.
A 6-0 shutout win against North Branford showed West Haven with puck control skills and neutral zone control. This is a season where West Haven is playing after losing 11 seniors due to graduation, which has formed new lines across all rotations.
The Co-op Devils are led by captains Connor Moriarty, Leo Mazuroski, and Sean Bush. West Haven closes out a stacked January with eight games, (JAN 7 @ Cheshire | JAN 10 vs North Haven | JAN 15 @ Guilford | JAN 19 vs East Haven | JAN 21 @ Hamden | JAN 24 vs Watertown | JAN 28 vs New Milford | JAN 31 vs Hamden) which includes a critical three-game homestand before a road trip to begin February.
West Haven’s January 10th home game against North Haven will be a celebration game for the program’s 100th anniversary. Puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m at Bennett Rink for the Saturday hockey match.
