Early Tuesday morning, the University of New Haven announced that the college is moving up to NCAA Division II competition.
The move doesn’t necessarily come as a shock nor a surprise as rumors of a potential move to DI have been circulating for about a half-decade.
UNH will have all athletic programs make the move to the Northeast Conference (NEC) on July 1st, 2025. The Chargers will attain full Division I membership in 2028-29 following the reclassification period.
Beginning with the 2025-26 academic year, New Haven will become the tenth full-time member of the NEC. UNH’s athletic schedules will be integrated with the NEC, with the exception of football. Currently, the timing of UNH’s football addition to the conference is still to be determined.
Once football does follow with UNH's other progams and moves to DI, it would become the second-current Division I football program to have a blue turf field, joining Boise State.
