After several years of the idea being iced, the University of New Haven is once again starting up a women’s hockey program.
The Chargers previously put a women’s team together in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to that and since the idea remained in limbo.
Since then it has been a goal of Devin Bertrand to re-form a team. Bertrand was one of the key persons behind the hopes of the 2019 team, and is the current Head Coach of the men’s hockey team.
When freshman Sarah Kelly came to UNH, she was surprised that there was no women’s team and decided to change that. She teamed up with Bertrand and created the University of New Haven Women’s Club Hockey Team, which is actively recruiting players and has a goal to start competing in the Fall Semester of 2025 as an AAU Team.
Kelly told CT Sideline Sports, “Rather than waiting for someone else to make this team happen, I decided to step up and try to get this program off the ground.”
Kelly, who also plans on being on the ice herself as a player, is behind the player recruiting process as she is managing the women’s hockey social media account on Instagram, @unewhavenwclubhockey.
The women’s team is currently recruiting players and a form could be found in the bio of the hockey’s instagram account.
