The Rangers Need To Pull The Trigger On Patrik Laine

The New York Rangers stand as favorites for Patrik Laine with the start of training camp continuing to get closer. Overall, New York has had an active offseason – something that cannot be described for the other two  New York hockey teams. Coming off of a season that saw last place in the Metropolitan Division and a sub .500% record, it’s safe to say that the Rangers championship window has closed and rebuilding mode is on.

A solid amount of draft capital and using the space they had in salary cap, the Rangers were able to pull off quality moves this offseason. One name that has stuck with New York ever since the season ended is Patrik Liane. With free agency mostly said and done, Lane remains quite possibly the most notable name left unsigned as the calendar hits mid-August.

Laine is a solid addition to any offensive-needy team, which makes him a perfect fit for the Rangers. Unfortunately his downside is a negative degree slope, as Laine has only appeared in 75 games over the past three years, constantly being sidelined with injuries. It’s more than worthy to note though that Laine’s production in those 75 games have been sharp: 26 goals total with 16 coming on the man-advantage.

Injuries and an added defensive inconsistency aside, adding Laine makes sense for New York if it was a one-to-two year low AAV deal. Lane’s goal scoring and veteran presence is exactly what the Rangers need entering the 2026/27 season, and if Laine is able to avoid the injury bug and play a full season he would be a threat for 30 goals scored.
