Kodai Senga was a prized free agent signing when acquired by the New York Mets in the 2022 offseason. Now, with three years under his belt in the majors, Senga has pitched to a flat 3.00 ERA in 285 innings.

Despite Senga’s great production, one undeniable factor is that he simply cannot stay healthy. Senga’s time on the injured list has limited him to just 52 starts, with just one start in 2024 making up his entire season of 5.1 innings.

With Senga’s health woes and frankly inconsistent stat line at 2025’s end, the Mets have been looking at possible trade options for the 5-foot-1 right-hander. Senga’s current contract ends in 2027, but does carry a team option for 2028, overall it is worth $75 million.

Per numerous reports, Kodai Senga has indicated to the Mets front office that he prefers to remain in Queens rather than be traded this winter. However, the Mets may still deal him off if the return is right. Senga, who is set to turn 33 this upcoming January, has a 10-team no-trade clause in his contract.

The Mets are in need of top-of-the rotation impact arms for 2026, and Senga’s time on the IL has made him into an unreliable factor. Let me remind everyone, the Mets pulled Senga and sent him down to Triple-AAA in the midst of the team fighting for their playoff lives, showing a rather alarming sign of lack of confidence in him during his struggles.

Nonetheless, Senga would be considered a high-value trade target in an offseason where free agent starting pitching is lukewarm. New York has already shown that they do not mind shaking up the core, showing that with the trading of Brandon Nimmo.
