West Haven High School alumni Tommy Lawrence is back in the baseball scene after a three-year hiatus.

Lawrence was part of the 2009 Blue Devils baseball state championship team, and attended Division I Maine for college ball. The righty was then signed as a UDFA by the Tampa Bay Rays in June of 2014, and was assigned to the GCL Rays at the rookie ball level.

In one season with the GCL Rays, Lawrence posted a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings and notched four saves. Since being released by the Rays organization, Lawrence has bounced around several independent leagues before taking a three-year break post-2022.

Since 2022, Lawrence has taken the role of coach and instructor at The Grind, along with various roles as a pitching coach. A 2021 interview with the New York Sports Show, talks with Tommy about his baseball career and time at West Haven High.

Now 34, Lawrence is back in the baseball scene as a player. Lawrence, who has been a pitching coach for the New Jersey Jackals, got several opportunities to take the mound for the Independent team. Lawrence would be placed on the Jackals inactive list on June 17th. Before being placed on the inactive list, Lawrence appeared in three games, which included one start.

The New Jersey Jackals are part of the Frontier Baseball League, which is partnered with Major League Baseball and is mainly compared to being similar to the MLB’s Single-A level.

Pitching in 8 innings, Lawrence fanned three batters and had an ERA tune of 12.38, which is imploded due to the low number of innings pitched.

As of 2025, Lawrence is the most successful baseball player to come out of West Haven High School since Art Ceccarelli in the 1960s.
