Anthony Volpe On Edge Of Mendoza Line As Disappointing June Nears End

“The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” Yes, that is a direct quote from A Bronx Tale. For the Bronx Bombers this season it has been a June that featured the most ridicule towards Anthony Volpe, whom many fans feel as if his talent is being wasted due to his many mistakes this season.

Volpe, who was once a top five prospect for the organization, is in the midst of his third season in the majors. Despite winning Gold Glove his rookie year, Volpe’s defense has been sloppy ever since and a quiet offensive bat has garnered him to be one of the most inconsistent players on the Yankees. Volpe’s 10 errors has him leading all shortstops and overall ranks him 9th this season throughout the majors.

2025 has featured a slash line of .228 / .311 / .412 and a career-high .723 OPS in 82 games. Volpe currently sits with a 1.6 WAR, 44 RBIs and 9 home runs. He is on pace for 90 RBIs, which would shatter his career-high of 60.

After coming off of a strong month of May, Volpe was expected to carry the momentum into the beginning of the summer months - it has been anything but that. In 26 June games, Volpe is flirting with the Mendoza line at .202 (17-for-84) with a OBP of .292, while grounding into three double plays.

Obviously the Yankees aren’t going to trade Volpe, but we may see the team make a move for a shortstop in the offseason, especially with Blue Jays star Bo Bichette being a free agent. Any move for a shortstop would have Volpe move to second base, as the chances of him losing his starter role would be very unlikely barring a massive statistical decline.

Volpe is only 24-years-old, he made his major league debut at 21. There is still a very high ceiling for the New Jersey native. Let me remind you Aaron Judge didn’t make his debut until age 24. Now in no way I am saying Volpe is going to be like Judge, but undoubtedly there is still a lot more time for him to develop and mold into a solid hitter and consistent defender.
