Russia has freed WNBA player Brittney Griner in a prisoner swap with the U.S. releasing Russian arms dealer Viktor 'Merchant of Death' Bout. Griner was detained of February at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport after Russian authorities found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage.
After being convicted and spending several months in Russian captivity she is now free in what was a high-profile prisoner swap. The move marks one of the most high-profile prisoner swaps between Moscow and Washington since the Cold War, with the Kremlin seeking the return of Viktor Bout. The Russian was 11-years in on what was a 25-year sentence in the United States.
With that Griner is free and is expected to play in the upcoming WNBA season.
